Historically made from black bamboo, modern angklungs like this one are typically crafted from yellow or green bamboo and are used in both ceremonial and educational contexts throughout Indonesia and beyond. Traditionally, each player holds one angklung tuned to a single note, with groups of players combining to perform full melodies. This instrument offers a wonderful entry point into Indonesian musical tradition and is a staple of world music education programs.

Care & Maintenance

Bamboo instruments respond to changes in humidity and temperature, so it is best to store this angklung away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and damp environments. Avoid submerging or saturating the bamboo with water. Periodically inspect the rattan lashings for any loosening and re-tie as needed. A light application of mineral oil or bamboo-specific conditioner can help prevent cracking in very dry climates. Handle with care to preserve the tuning and structural integrity of the bamboo tubes.
