This bombarde is crafted from rosewood, a dense and resonant toneword prized for its natural beauty and acoustic properties. The body is lathe-turned into elegant, shapely sections joined with silver-toned metal ferrules that provide both structural integrity and a refined aesthetic. The flared bell at the lower end is finished in a cream-colored composite material that complements the warm wood tones.

Sound & Playability

Pitched in Bb, this bombarde plays a diatonic scale across two octaves, delivering the characteristic high, penetrating tone that defines the instrument in traditional Breton and Celtic ensembles. The double reed is held between the lips rather than enclosed in a windcap, giving players direct expressive control over dynamics and articulation. Despite its compact size, the bombarde produces a bold, cutting sound that carries well outdoors and sits naturally alongside bagpipes in ensemble settings.

About This Instrument

The bombarde, known as the talabard in Breton, is a living folk instrument rooted in the Celtic traditions of Brittany in northwestern France and Cornwall in England. It belongs to the oboe family and shares its conical bore with the bagpipe chanter, producing a similarly bright and focused timbre. Bombardes are frequently heard at Breton fest-noz gatherings and in kan ha diskan singing traditions, often paired with the biniou bihan bagpipe. For players drawn to early music, Celtic heritage, or woodwind exploration, the bombarde offers a distinctive and historically rich musical path.

Care & Maintenance

Rosewood benefits from periodic oiling with an appropriate bore oil to maintain moisture balance and prevent cracking, particularly in dry climates. Swab the bore thoroughly after each playing session to remove reed moisture. Store the bombarde in its case away from direct heat, sunlight, and extreme humidity changes. Reeds should be soaked briefly in water before playing and stored dry between sessions. Inspect the ferrules and joints regularly to ensure a secure, airtight fit.
