Paraguayan Harp – 38 Strings (Pre-Owned)

Maker: Valois Rojas

This beautiful 38-string Paraguayan harp, handcrafted by renowned maker Valois Rojas, delivers the warm, resonant tone that defines the traditional folk music of Paraguay and South America. Lightweight yet full-bodied in sound, it offers remarkable clarity and expressiveness across its full range—perfect for both performance and practice.

About Paraguayan Harps

The Paraguayan harp is the national instrument of Paraguay and one of the most distinctive folk harps in the world. Unlike orchestral harps, it is built without pedals and is known for its bright, lively tone and exceptional resonance. Its slightly curved neck and light, hollow body—traditionally made from native woods such as cedar or pine—allow for both volume and portability, making it ideal for touring musicians and folk ensembles.

Often featured in traditional styles like polka paraguaya and guarania, the Paraguayan harp’s clear treble and warm bass range give it a uniquely expressive voice. Its smooth glissandos, rhythmic versatility, and delicate sustain make it a favorite among both folk musicians and modern harpists seeking new tonal colors.

How It Compares to Other Latin American Harps

While the Venezuelan arpa llanera and the Andean harp share some similarities, the Paraguayan harp stands apart in design and sound. The Venezuelan harp typically has fewer strings and produces a more percussive tone suited to joropo rhythms, while the Andean harp has a larger body and deeper bass resonance for high-altitude folk styles. In contrast, the Paraguayan harp’s balanced tone, smooth articulation, and refined craftsmanship make it one of the most versatile and melodically rich instruments in the Latin American harp family.
