This Bougarabou is hand-crafted in Ghana from a solid carved wooden shell with a warm, medium-brown finish and natural wood grain throughout. The shell tapers from a wide playing surface down to a separate turned wooden base, giving the drum its distinctive tall, elegant silhouette. Vertical black rope lacing runs the full length of the shell, anchored by a horizontal tension ring at mid-body. The crown is finished with traditional colorful fabric woven between the lacing and the head ring, a hallmark of West African drum craftsmanship. Head diameter is 11 inches and overall height is 24 inches.

Sound & Playability

The goatskin head, with its natural fur intact, produces a rich, textured tone with a warm bass response and lively mid-range definition. The fur slightly softens the attack compared to a fully shaved skin, giving the Bougarabou a distinctly earthy character that sets it apart from a standard djembe. The rope-tension system allows for tuning adjustments over time as the head settles, and the tall body projects sound forward with good volume and depth. This drum is traditionally played as part of a Bougarabou ensemble, though it also stands beautifully as a solo hand drum.

About This Instrument

The Bougarabou is a traditional goblet-style drum originating from the Diola people of Senegal and The Gambia, though it is crafted and played widely across West Africa including Mali. Unlike the djembe, the Bougarabou is typically played in sets of three or four drums of varying sizes, with players using bare hands to produce interlocking rhythmic patterns. This 11-inch by 24-inch example represents the larger, deeper-toned end of a traditional ensemble. It is made in Mali and carries the authentic construction methods passed down through generations of West African drum makers.

Care & Maintenance

Natural goatskin heads respond to changes in humidity and temperature. In dry conditions, a light application of natural oil (such as shea or almond oil) applied sparingly to the skin will help maintain flexibility and prevent cracking. Avoid leaving the drum in direct sunlight or in a closed vehicle for extended periods. Store in a cool, dry environment when not in use. The rope-tension system can be tightened gradually if the head loosens over time. The fur on the head requires no special treatment but should be kept dry.
