We love how this ocean drum stops people in their tracks before they even hear a note. The tie-dyed skin is genuinely striking, with that deep teal starburst radiating out through greens and yellows into warm amber and orange. Pick it up and tilt it gently, and the soft cascade of beads rolling across the head is instantly transportive.
Construction & Materials
This ocean drum features a circular frame body with a shallow profile, finished with a decorative ornamental band around the rim. The playing surface is a natural hide skin with a vibrant hand tie-dyed finish, making each drum visually unique. Metal beads are sealed inside the drum chamber, rolling freely across the head to produce the characteristic ocean sound. The overall construction is lightweight and easy to hold in both hands. Dimensions 20" diameter, 3" thick.
Sound & Playability
To create ocean wave sounds, hold the drum horizontally with the heads parallel to the floor, then slowly rotate your wrists to tilt the drum in gentle, flowing directions. The beads roll across the skin in waves, closely mimicking the sound of water rushing over shore. Tilt quickly for crashing wave effects, or move slowly and steadily for a calm, rolling tide. This instrument is also versatile beyond ocean sounds: hold it upright and tap the head like a frame drum, shake it rhythmically like a shekere, or use it in meditation and sound therapy contexts. Players of all levels find it intuitive to pick up and explore.
About This Instrument
Ocean drums are found in music therapy, world music performance, classroom percussion, and meditative practice around the globe. The tie-dyed skin on this version adds a handcrafted, artisan quality that sets it apart from standard synthetic-head models. Because the dye process is applied by hand, no two drums carry the exact same pattern, making yours a one-of-a-kind instrument. It is equally at home in a recording studio, a school music room, or a sound healing session.
Care & Maintenance
Natural hide skins respond to changes in humidity and temperature. Store the drum in a stable indoor environment away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and moisture. Avoid leaving it in a hot car or damp space, as extreme conditions can warp the skin or loosen the frame. Clean the skin gently with a dry soft cloth. Handle the rim and decorative band carefully to preserve the finish.

Nice sound
This was my first ever Hardanger, so I basically wanted a "Squier" version of a Hardanger: an entry level Hardanger to learn on that was new and solid but wouldn't break the bank. This has been pretty much perfect and just what I wanted.I love playing it.
Beautiful amazing instrument! Easy and fun to play! Highly recommended! Great customer service and fast shipping!!
Jackie arrived, nicely packed and in rapid order... much lighter than I expected, thank goodness as the instrument is attached to the player by their thumbs (and mine are kind of old).
I never thought that it would be so challenging for me to learn play ... so different from anything I've tried before... I can feel the neurons in my brain sparking and protesting. Actually, it feels good to build new pathways. The cat is none too pleased with my new endeavor. However, Jackie is a beautiful instrument, well made and of good quality. I'm sure, in time, we'll become the best of friends.
Thanks to all at Lark in the Morning for making my experience so pleasant and trouble free. <3
The external Twin Spot works great on my Irish Bouzouki. I've scotched taped the pickup heads and wires it in place for easy adjustment, and the pick up sensitivity is very good. I'm running it through my guitar DI box for increased sensitivity and tone control.
